There are some excellent examples of fachwerk construction in Hahndorf, and we want to show them to you!
Sharon from HWT takes guests to various locations in the village to visit those sites. On this tour, we learn about early Prussian immigrants fleeing to South Australia to escape persecution, discover the old folklore of the village, go inside St Paul’s church, and more.
Included is a 30-minute talk and demonstration of hand hewing lumber using traditional woodworking tools. This part of the tour will be undertaken by Mr. Chris Hein, who has an Advanced Masters degree in Archaeological Science from ANU, and whose experimental archaeology thesis project (a fachwerk frame) will be displayed. Refreshments are provided.
This Hahndorf walking tour takes guests into the back streets of Hahndorf into the Hufendorf. Visit the oldest fachwerk home in Southern Australia, go inside St Michael’s Lutheran Church and to the old blacksmith’s shop, and learn about the Pioneer Women’s Walking Trail.
The making of a mortise and tenon joint will be demonstrated on this tour.
